previous | next ![]() Ankara Anıtkabir The pictures in this gallery roughly represent a walk to and through the complex of the Atatürk monumental resting place (I think the translation would be Attürk Mausoleum). After having walked up a hill one first comes across these stairs, with a hall on either side, called the Tower of Independence and of Freedom. In the halls were pictures of plans for the complex that (in some cases luckily) didn't make it. |

![]() Ankara Anıtkabir In the walls of some of the halls and galleries that constitute the complex are symbolic representations of the nation, the population, science and the miliraty. I don't bother to interpret or look it up. They are very large, but fit in well. |

![]() Ankara Anıtkabir The two groups of men and women on either side of the start of the triumphal lane. They stand in front of the Tower of Independence and of Freedom and represent the nation. A viewer explained: The man wearing a cap is a soldier of the nation, the rigthmost man is the intellectual of the nation and the man behind them is a shepher who symbolizes Anatolian villagers. The leftmost women holds the holy book Quoran, the one in the middle is crying and the rigthmost one stands proudly and greeting. |

![]() Ankara Anıtkabir In front of the left (coming up the stairs) hall are some statues of men, representing the population. I could not resist the aura of the sun around the central man's head, but he is not Atatürk, nor a saint, just a victim of photographic Spielerei. |

![]() Ankara Anıtkabir This is the right hall one sees after climbing the first stairs. In front statues of women (man of the other side), again representing the population. The halls on either side are called the Tower of Independence and of Freedom. |
